Blue bell fields forever
February 22, 2009
The blue bells (and buttercups) have sprouted everywhere here in Edenbridge! This is the field behind our local vet. There is a small wood on the other side of a stream and this is the edge of the woods. Behind me is a field of buttercups, to the left of me is a hill leading to the railway track and to the right of me is a field full of sheep.

Drops on leaf
February 21, 2009
In a continuing effort to post something, anything here (instead of just leaving it to collect dust) I’m going to try and post a pic a day from my Flickr stream. Nothing fancy, but please add your comments here and/or on Flickr. I’d love to have any feedback on this and anything I post here, on Flickr as well as FriendFeed (which I’m trying to link to this blog as much as possible). Today’s pic:

From a lack of response from WordPress support I take it that I cannot import all my old blog entries from my Serendipity blog to the new WordPress blog. So this will mean that we start afresh. Welcome
January 30, 2008
Hello!
This is a quick post to say hello and welcome to my site. Out with the old Serendipity and PixelPost sites and in with the new all-in-one WordPress/Revolution site. If you’ve somehow found this site now you’ll see that it’s very much in the construction process. I uploaded the new site early January 2008 to the UK domain during the implementation process. Once all the basics are set-up and I’m happy to go the old photography site and blog will be taken down and replaced with what you see here. So if you bear with me I will be working on the site over the coming days, weeks and months.

Day out at Goodwood Festival of Speed 2007
January 4, 2008
Last one from the ‘old news box’…
My brother and I went down to Goodwood Festival of Speed 2007 near Chicester for the middle day (Saturday 23rd June 2007). We were up early as we thought we’d either get lost like we normally do or we’d get stuck in major traffic. But the journey down was a doddle (apart from a little tour of a roundabout or two) and it’s was dead quiet. The flyer said to look out for signs to the event but we couldn’t see them though we did work it out in the end and rolled into the field/car park close to the top and thus the entrance. So a good start.

Day out at Le Tour de France London Prologue 2007
January 3, 2008
I was up in London for the Saturday (7th July 2007) Prologue of Le Tour de France in London. I thought it was fantastic! Up very early I made my way to Marble Arch. At this point it was pretty empty and quiet, but as I walked around I found some people already placing seats along the course. There was still lots of spaces, though so I decided to walk it, from Hyde Park to the finish, boy that was a long walk. On my way I went through a very busy area where people were shouting and screaming to encourage you to buy their wares. Pretty much everyone was at the finish and I could hardly see the track. So I chose to turn back to find a better location. Read more

Day out at the Red Bull Air Race 2007 London
January 3, 2008
More old photos and more old news but an entry nevertheless:
My brother and I enjoyed the Red Bull Air Race on Sunday 29th July 2007. We were up at the crack of dawn, missed the first train out of Edenbridge so drove to Redhill to get up to London. Tube was fine and we found it to be fairly quiet when we first got there (35k turned up in the end, they say). We had bought standing tickets on the South of the river where we could see the end of the ‘track’ and a big screen showing the whole thing.

Movie recommendation: Sunshine
September 2, 2007
I’ve kept this one separate and I think it needs highlighting on its own. The movie is called Sunshine and is one of the best movies I’ve seen in years. It is from the director of Trainspotting, The Beach, Shallow Grave and 28 Days Later and the producer of 28 Weeks Later. Think along the lines of 2001/2010 with a bit of Solaris and Event Horizon mixed in.

Music recommendation: 8mm - Songs to Love & Die By
May 26, 2007
I hate seeing good bands not doing well. I’ve been listening to 8mm for ages now, I recently noticed their album was out so went to search on Kelkoo UK only to find Amazon UK were the only company stocking it in this country. So here’ my little bit to promote 8mm. They are a 3-piece trip-hop band, similar to Lamb, (one of my favourite bands) from the USA. So if that’s to your liking then have a look at their MySpace page here:

Interesting link: The First Post
May 20, 2007
I’m starting to really like this site. It’s called The First Post. It’s basically an online news site. Very well written (though the sports articles appear to be from offline papers, well they did on Sunday) and nice big photos (which makes a change to the stupidly small thumbnail size pics you normally get). You can subscribe to several regular e-mail subscriptions and RSS feeds, which seem to come at you at about 9:45AM (in the UK anyway ;-)). First music recommendations
May 13, 2007
Another new category, this blogging is becoming addictive.
I thought I’d post some CDs I’ve bought recently. I just love music and in the last year or two I’ve started digging a bit further to unearth some lesser-known artists and bands (which you usual find are better than the drivel that you head in the charts), so you may or may not have heard of these. I rarely buy an album as most are just pants, when I buy a CD it’s becuase I love 90% or more of the tracks on it, liking 6 out of 10 just isn’t enough for me. So recent purchases are (in no particular order): - Read more

Another good article from New Scientist was ‘Mind-altering media’. This is something that touches me personally as I’ve worked in the computer games industry. Myself, I find it very hard to believe that players and viewers of violent videogames and movies make for violent people. I think if you’re violent it will come up regardless of experiencing modern media. What I don’t like to see is violent games sold to underage children, someone somewhere needs to take responsibility for misselling these games. You can’t let a 12 year old play an 18 certificate game! A child will imitate, far more than an adult, what they experience, if they interact with a violent game then they are more likely to copycat the experience in real-life.

Another interesting article from New Scientist, ‘How to make better decisions’. It’s a top ten list and I’ve written some highlights from article below:

I’ll be updating this article regularly. When I find photographers and artists that interest me, inspire me or are just plain good IMHO, then the poor souls will get a link added here:

Photography-related magazine and newspapers
March 18, 2007
A few links to newspapers and magazines I read:
Newspapers
The Independent
- I’ve never really settled on a newspaper until perhaps recently. I’ve started regularly buying the Independent, don’t say a word.
In the last few months it has had ‘free’ week-long specials including ‘Improve Your Photography’ and there is the odd ‘Independent Photographer’ supplement in the Web User magazine (of which I’ve only got Part 1 and 3 L). The Independent takes photography very seriously and I expect to see lots of articles and supplements in the future.

Photography books
March 18, 2007
Here’s a list of photography and Photoshop books I’ve collected over the last few months, as you can see I’ve got a lot of reading.
Hopefully these will be good reference material and give me ideas (links go to Amazon UK pages and I will add notes to each book later):

My computer set-up
March 18, 2007
Yep I have one, well 2 and another which is sort of dead.
Hardware
I recently bought a Rock Extreme CTX Pro laptop. A laptop has been on my luxury-to-buy list for years and I decided to buy one when a much lower than expected VAT bill came my way one month. It’s amazing but eats up battery power like nobody’s business. It’s to get me away from my monster desktop machine upstairs as it’s basically a desktop replacement machine. I have a 64 bit AMD 3200+ 2GHz machine. Quick tip here, don’t buy anything 64 bit, not until 2008 anyway, bloody hard to get drivers (as its too expensive for developers to develop on) and some software will just point-blank refuse to work on it. My machine has a lush 1.5Gb of RAM and a snazzy nVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT gfx card in it. It’s dog slow at the moment. I’m about to upgrade to a 2GHz 3800+ AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core CPU and up the RAM to a total of 2.5Gb.

This’ll be the software article then, OK, no points for guessing that I’ll chat away about software here. A list of software appears below:

Photography training info
March 4, 2007
Here is a bit of info on some training I hope to take at some point. As I work and don’t have the luxury to take time off I’ve opted for the home study option. After a long period of searching the net and obtaining info from all sorts Open College of Arts came out on top.

Acetaldehyde
February 21, 2007
It’s a very, very bad thing.
I’m a regular reader of New Scientist, it’s possibly my favourite magazine - it’s fantastic! Last week’s was no exception. One article was particularly interesting and shocked me a little bit. I discovered that this thing called acetaldehyde (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetaldehyde) is very nasty. Acetaldehyde basically is produced by your liver as it breaks down ethanol and causes, among other things, the infamous “hangover”. But there is so much more to it. If you drink, smoke or have bad dental hygiene read on…

I wish I could…
February 11, 2007
I’m an Independent reader and today they had this Parship dating questionnaire (see http://independent.parship.co.uk/ for more details). So for a bit of fun I registered and went through the very long questionnaire (no I don’t think I’ll get any response). The interesting part was the ‘About me’ section where it asked you a few interesting questions, one of them was “I wish I could…”. So here are my answers (open to updates and changes ;-)):

One thing I hate about MS Windows
February 11, 2007
It gets on my nerves more and more as time goes by. I like to multi-task, get more things done in a shorter space of time, but when you set off one window or program to do something then open up something else, if that first thing does something like refreshes or displays a message then it brings that to the front. So I’m happily typing or working away in my new window then the first window pops up in front of it. So annoying!! If I’ve selected that window to work in the background then it should stay there until I selected otherwise.

Why?
January 31, 2007
OK, why this change of direction all of a sudden, well, like everyone, I would like to be in a place where I’m as happy as I can be. Working in an office is good and I get a kick out of producing a report, helping out on projects and of course it pays the bills. But as a long term goal I’m after something more creative, something a bit different…

How to become a professional photographer… hopefully
January 30, 2007
Well I’ve had this blog set-up for months now so I better go ahead and use it, eh? The idea behind it (currently) is to not only use the site as a portfolio (in the future anyway) but also to document my progress from happy snapper to professional photographer or is that just a better happy snapper.
Hopefully this’ll help me, as well as anyone else foolish enough to read this, while gaining some expertise in photography and photo-manipulation.
I’ve eager pursue a more creative area. I have two avenues, should I concentrate in getting back into pencil drawing or perhaps into my new interest, photography? I’ve not drawn anything in anger since college and nothing of importance since school (ooh 14 years ago now) but I’m a far better artist than I am a photographer right now so you think I would go down the drawing route, right? Wrong. Photography has surprisingly grabbed a hold on me recently. I’ve never taken an interest in the art, never looked at a photo and thought ‘hey, that’s a really well taken picture’. It’s all changed and now love looking at photography and taking pictures myself. It’s something I feel I can progress with and perhaps take into a future career. Drawing can wait a little bit longer, I know I can draw I just need to be taught the proper technique. What I could do later is combine both photography and drawing by taking photos then reproducing them on a piece of paper. One way or the other, I certainly hope to get some enjoyment out of finding my artistic roots again.
